Me First and the Gimme Gimmes: Have Another Ball

I’ve been an evangelical fan of the Gimme Gimmes for a long time, thanks to Joe Darin’s recommendation back in the day.

Same ol’ schtick. Punk-style covers of old 60s and 70s tunes. Unlike the majority of their previous releases… they sound like they’re not even trying on this one. Maybe it’s because I’m not as familiar with the songs covered on the release, but it just sounds like they phoned it in.

Their show we saw at Black Cat is among my all-time favorites. This album is not. I’m somewhat heartbroken.

  1. Dude, I completely agree. Huge fan. Weak album. Not sure if you know, but these were recorded 10 years ago, and were originally released on a double album (and a few made it out on 7″).
I’m loving Love Their Country more and more daily.

  2. I read that these were the ones that didn’t make the original “Have a Ball” release. If so, for good reason.

Is that the whole 10 years ago thing?

Re: Love Their Country… that’s closer to the energy I was talking aboot. I love the conflation of “Astro Zombies” with Willie Nelson. “Jolene” has got to be the best country cover of all time; the drums are completely inappropriate and awesome.

Just watch ol’ Bandit run, son. :)
