Okay, one of the major shortcomings to this text-based Internet (email/web/whatever) is the inherent lack of inflection. What you type is what they see, and there’s no room for interpretation. Your words must stand on their own, without implication.
But, given frequent ‘net-based interaction, it’s not all that hard to figure out what’s going on, despite the perceived impersonality of it all.
Sometimes, it’s all too personal.
